What’s next for The Wachowskis? If you’re a fan of The Matrix empire, you’ll be happy to discover they’re returning to familiar ground.
Say what you will about their post-Matrix work, such as Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas - two extremely different but uniquely interesting films – I don’t think The Wachowskis have ever betrayed their sense of entertainment. For them, what makes a movie fun is striking an equal balance between story, visuals and characters. And despite the mixed reactions to their the work over the last several years, I think everyone could agree the siblings always stay true to their filmmaking ideals.
Jupiter Ascending is next on the docket. The title, for the past several months, has been the only detail we’ve been aware of. But as of yesterday, a press release containing story details and cast shed some light on the project that’s got industry followers buzzing.
Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things. Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning toilets and an endless run of bad breaks. Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along – her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.
Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) and Mila Kunis (Oz The Great and Powerful) lead an international cast that also includes Sean Bean (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy), Eddie Redmayne (Les Misérables), Douglas Booth (LOL), Tuppence Middleton (TV’s “The Lady Vanishes”), Doona Bae (Cloud Atlas), James D’Arcy (Hitchcock) and Tim Pigott-Smith(Alice in Wonderland).
The Wachowskis taking on space science fiction? Count me in.
Also, re-teaming with the directors are Cloud Atlas cinematographer John Toll, and VFX masters Dan Glass & John Gaetta. Jupiter Ascending will be hitting theatres July 25, 2014.
