The Way, Way Back is a movie that’s high on my “most anticipated” list for the summer. Written and directed by Jim Rash (Community) and Nat Faxon (Beerfest) who received an Oscar for penning The Descendants a couple of years ago, this film became a fast favourite at Sundance this past winter. The film features a dynamite cast (including Steve Carell, Toni Collette and Sam Rockwell to name a few) in a coming-of-age tale, backdropped by duelling families stuck on a less-than-great summer vacation.
This video is mostly all for fun, but is branded as a featurette (and will most likely be seen on the Blu-Ray special features). To cast a couple of the smaller parts for their film, Rash and Faxon jokingly dip into the Community pool (and Will Forte) to see if anyone would fit.
The Way, Way Back opens in theatres on July 5th. You can watch the trailer for the film here. Check out the film’s synopsis after the video…
THE WAY, WAY BACK is the funny and poignant coming of age story of 14-year-old Duncan’s (Liam James) summer vacation with his mother, Pam (Toni Collette), her overbearing boyfriend, Trent (Steve Carell), and his daughter, Steph (Zoe Levin). Having a rough time fitting in, the introverted Duncan finds an unexpected friend in gregarious Owen (Sam Rockwell), manager of the Water Wizz water park. Through his funny, clandestine friendship with Owen, Duncan slowly opens up to and begins to finally find his place in the world – all during a summer he will never forget.
