Sony has unveiled a domestic and international poster for Captain Phillips, the new Paul Greengrass film starring Tom Hanks, who plays the cinema version of Richard Phillips, the real-life cargo ship captain who was taken hostage by Somali pirates.
There’s been some early (and probably justified) talk that this film, which is based on a true story, will be a likely contender come awards season. If done well, these adapted true stories can bring a weighty gravitas to a film that standard fiction can’t replicate. It’s the realism factor which, in dramatic situations, defaults our emotions to natural states of fear and sympathy.
In real life, the cargo ship called Maersk Alabama has a hell of a history. We’ll just say that this standalone film only documents one of the attempted hijackings. You can learn more about its full story here.
The film stars Tom Hanks and Catherine Keener with a strong supporting cast featuring Barkhad Abdi, Michael Chernus, David Warshofsky, and Max Martini. Billy Ray adapted Richard Phillips’ book entitled, “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS and Dangerous Days at Sea”.
Look for this dramatic biopic/actioner when it hits theatres on October 11th.
