The Rock will be playing Hercules. Hm. Has this guy been chasing this role his entire career? Perhaps not consciously, but in the eyes of his fans, there’s no one better suited to play him.
Dwayne Johnson has tweeted yet another photo from the set of his new film, based on the Hercules series from Radical Comics. We still haven’t seen a front-facing shot of the actor as the titular badass, but we’ve seen lots of biceps, triceps, calf muscles, etc. While it’s nice that Johnson is in touch with his audience and fans through social media, these photos do nothing except confirm that Johnson is in good shape for the role.
Here’s my thing about this movie: If you want to give new life to the Greek god in the 21st century, make this film hit you over the head with the club Hercules likes to carry around. I’m thinking Game of Thrones meets greek mythology. Don’t be shy about an R-rating. You want to make Hercules cool again. You don’t want to make him into the Scorpion King.
So, hopefully they stick to the source material. Hercules: The Thracian Wars is directed by Brett Ratner and also stars Rufus Sewell, Ian McShane, John Hurt, Joseph Fiennes, Aksel Hennie, Tobias Santelmann, Irina Shayk, and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal. It opens in theatres on July 25th, 2014.
