HBO Films presents Behind the Candelabra, Starring Academy Award Winners Michael Douglas and Matt Damon; executive produced by Emmy Award winner Jerry Weintraub and directed by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh from a script by Oscar nominee Richard LaGrevenese. The film is produced by Gregory Jacobs, Susan Ekins and Michael Polaire.
That’s a lame synopsis, but it comes straight from HBO’s official site for the film. Besides all the ego tripping about the Oscar-nominated talent involved with the film, it’s important to look at the story: the secret life of Liberace. In a world in which he’d be nailed on a cross for the private life he led behind the curtains of his lavish profile, existed a man who yearned to be the man he was actually born to be; to love the people he wanted to love. Michael Douglas stars as the famed pianist while a very young-looking Matt Damon plays his lover.
This is the first trailer we’ve seen with any footage for the film itself and, contrary to Soderbergh’s Side Effects, this film looks grandiose and lavish. This may be the director’s last feature film. Don’t hold your breath, but if it is, he is sure aiming to go out with a bang.
Behind the Candelabra airs on HBO in May.
