After months of waiting, we’ve finally got our hands on the first international trailer for The World’s End, the final film in the Blood & Ice Cream Trilogy from Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg & Nick Frost.
Watching this trailer is bittersweet. You can tell these movies are made for everyone, but at its heart of hearts, there’s a subliminal sense that it’s made by film geeks for film geeks. I truly hope this won’t be the last film these gents make together.
Though Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End are three independent stories, they still feel part of a box set. They are unified by love of classic fanboy material, finely-tuned English humour, and solid filmmaking technique.
Seriously, these films are popular enough now that Wright and Pegg (the screenwriters) are referencing their own jokes. Whoever cut this trailer together was very smart to include the fence gag at the end. I nearly cheered aloud.
More good news for fans of the series – the release date for The World’s End was bumped up from September to August 23rd for the US/Canada and July 19th for the UK. The film also stars Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine, Eddie Marsan and Rosamund Pike.
20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hell bent on trying the drinking marathon again. They are convinced to stage an encore by mate Gary King, a 40-year old man trapped at the cigarette end of his teens, who drags his reluctant pals to their home town and once again attempts to reach the fabled pub, The World’s End. As they attempt to reconcile the past and present, they realize the real struggle is for the future, not just theirs but humankind’s. Reaching The World’s End is the least of their worries.
