For those familiar with the whole Oldboy story concept, the main character – Josh Brolin in the case of Spike Lee’s Americanized re-telling – is kept in a hotel. Well, a very disturbed hotel that resembles solitary confinement a little too much. And in Brolin’s case, he’s been booked in there for twenty years.
Universal Pictures has cut together a new teaser trailer for Oldboy that focuses on the hotel and its “inn keeper”, played by Samuel L. Jackson. They’ve also created a bunch of posters that are a bit like advertisements for the hotel. Not sure how effective these ads might be, unless you’re a prisoner in the market for a cheap place and a long-term hole up.
Oldboy opens in theatres on November 27th. If this teaser trailer truly captures the tone of the film, then I’ll genuinely look forward to seeing this remake instead of fearing it’s potential for being an Americanized, diluted wannabe. I fear the latter.
Starring Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, James Ransone and Samuel L. Jackson, Oldboy is a provocative, visceral thriller that follows the story of an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is abruptly kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.
