One of this year’s most anticipated films, 12 Years A Slave, from acclaimed director Steve McQueen is opening this weekend. It will receive a limited release and will no doubt be seen in more and more theatres as 2013 draws to a close.
12 Years a Slave takes its story from the memoirs of Solomon Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free African-American man living in the pre-Civil War upstate New York with his family. In a tragic turn, he’s abducted and sold into slavery, where, as the title suggests, he remains for 12 years.
While Django Unchained had the Quentin Tarantino flare for style and history, 12 Years A Slave will no doubt be hard to watch. If you watch these new clips, the horror Northup endured stares you right in the face. There’s no diverting your glare as Northup transitions from life as a free man to that as a slave.
