Sony has released a new trailer for writer/director Neill Blomkamp (District 9)’s sophomore outing Elysium. This extended three-minute trailer lays out the story pretty clearly. Earth has been left to the lower class, while the space station ‘Elysium’ is the utopian home for the top 1% and Matt Damon needs to get there to save his own skin. That’s all the plot I need.
Blomkamp has proven he can handle the sci-fi genre and the film’s visuals look awesome. I trust the talent, and Blomkamp could have done anything he wanted (a future Star Wars film???) after the critical and commercial success of District 9. There must have been a reason he chose this for a followup, and he’s working with a great cast – they habitually work on good material.
The supporting cast includes Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, William Fichtner and Wagner Moura.
In the year 2154, two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. The people of Earth are desperate to escape the crime and poverty that is now rampant throughout the land. The only man with the chance to bring equality to these worlds is Max (Matt Damon), an ordinary guy in desperate need to get to Elysium. With his life hanging in the balance, he reluctantly takes on a dangerous mission—one that pits him against Elysium’s Secretary Delacourt (Jodie Foster) and her hard-line forces—but if he succeeds, he could save not only his own life, but millions of people on Earth as well.
