Sony Pictures has released a second trailer for George Clooney’s latest directorial effort, The Monuments Men. In a race against time, a crew of art historians and museum curators fight to recover famous pieces of art stolen by the Nazis before Hitler destroys them.
Based on the book by Robert M. Edsel, this unique WWII drama (which, with this cast, should have some strong comedic element too) looks like one to watch. Clooney also stars in the film with frequent Hollywood collaborators Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Hugh Bonneville, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban and Cate Blanchett.
This trailer is much stronger than the first that debuted a few weeks ago. It runs the risk of seeming like “The Original Original Ocean’s 11″, but that feeling quickly washes away when the cast of characters and their mission is revealed. Backdropped by the looming Nazi regime and their determination to dispense of all things non-German, this trailer gives you a strong sense of this untold true story.
The Monuments Men will open in theatres on December 18th.
Co-writer and director George Clooney adapts author Robert M. Edsel’s book “The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History” to tell the incredible true story of the seven art historians and museum curators who went behind enemy lines during World War II on a mission to recover some of the world’s greatest works of art. As the Third Reich begins to topple, the German army receives explicit orders to destroy every work of art in their possession. Determined to prevent 1000 years of culture from going up in flames, American president Franklin D. Roosevelt assembles an unlikely task force comprised entirely of art experts to enter Germany, recover the works of art, and ensure they are returned to their rightful owners. With little knowledge of modern weapons or warfare tactics, the ragtag squadron successfully makes their way into enemy territory before realizing they’ve got their work cut out for them.
