Sam Raimi has had great success in the past. Both The Evil Dead and Army of Darkness launched him to the higher echelons of cult-status filmmakers. Those films would secure him opportunities to direct and produce some awesome movies.
But, then again, some might argue Raimi is one of those filmmakers who, when he’s good… he’s great; but when he’s bad… it can get pretty bad.
Oz The Great And Powerful wasn’t nearly as magical or timeless as The Wizard of Oz. I don’t think anyone would argue with me on that one. The film had its required moments: its action-y 3D sequences – some of which were better than others. However, the film’s climax was strong enough that all the things we could nit-pick about were forgotten.
But, the weird thing is… Oz had a really strange sense of familiarity for those fans of Raimi’s early movies. A little side-by-side comparison reveals that Oz was damned near identical to Army of Darkness. YouTuber maddoxaom uploaded a video essay that lays all the evidence on the table.
