Is this a cross between Pineapple Express and O Brother Where Art Thou? Absolutely not. As I Lay Dying is the ambitious debut of James Franco as writer, director and star of the feature film adaptation of William Faulkner’s novel of the same name. It is considered to be one of the most highly regarded pieces of literature in the last century – a Southern Gothic black comedy.
In these first official images, we get a glimpse at the uniquely cool cast Franco has assembled. His co-stars include Tim Blake Nelson, Prometheus‘s Logan Marshall-Green, Danny McBride, True Blood‘s Jim Parrack, Ahna O’Reilly and Richard Jenkins.
Here’s a plot overview for the novel, as the studio hasn’t yet released one for the film.
As I Lay Dying is told by fifteen different narrators over the course of fifty-nine narrative sections. The first section belongs to Darl Bundren, who introduces us to his brothers Cash and Jewel and his dying mother, Addie. The Bundrens live on a rural farm in Mississippi in the 1920s. Jewel is reserved and introverted; Cash, a skilled carpenter, is obsessively building his mother the most perfect coffin ever.
No official release date has been set, but you can bet your Limited Edition of The Last Starfighter that this will hit the festival circuit in mid to late 2013.
