Here are some new images from writer-director Scott Walker’s The Frozen Ground, starring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, Vanessa Hudgens, Dean Norris, Radha Mitchell & Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson. The trailer’s been kicking around the web for a month, which is surprisingly good (given the B-movie flavour to the story’s tone). Both former Con-Air co-stars might be getting up there in age, but jowls don’t necessarily mean either star has become inept: Cage isn’t his usual wooden self, and Cusack seems to excel at being cast against type.
The film is based on a true story, which may be the film’s biggest selling point. Cusack plays Robert Hansen, a killer who kidnaps prostitutes, rapes them, and then sets them free in the Alaskan wilderness so he can hunt them like animals. A story so disturbing doesn’t require complex filmmaking, but let’s hope that Walker can keep this cat-and-mouse story simple and effective. I’m thinking what Bruce A. Evans did with Mr. Brooks; or what Scott Frank did with The Lookout.
The Frozen Ground opens August 23rd and will also appear on Video on Demand services the same day. I’ve included the trailer in the post so you can get a feel for the film…the images are below.
“Frozen Ground” follows Alaskan detective Glenn Flothe (Cage) as he sets out to end the murderous rampage of Robert Hansen (Cusack), a serial killer who has gone unnoticed for 13 years. As the bodies of street girls start to add up in Anchorage, fear strikes a chord with the public. Risking his life, Detective Flothe goes on a personal manhunt to find the killer before the next body surfaces. When a seventeen year old escapee reveals key information about the case, Flothe is finally able to trail the killer. But will he catch him in time to save the next victim?
