Sony has released a new trailer and poster for director M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi flick After Earth. The film centers around a father and son (Will & Jaden Smith) who crash on a post-apocalyptic Earth. When did the post-apocalyptic genre become so popular? The Hunger Games, Oblivion, The Host and After Earth are all coming out this year, not to mention NBC’s heavily-marketed Revolution. Sample groups must have been only asking for “post-apocalyptic”.
Maybe the Mayan end of the world stuff got the writers inspired?
This film will be a pretty big test for the box office juggernaut that is Will Smith. Not only is his character playing more of a supporting role for son Jaden, a pseudo passing of the torch, but a film being directed by M. Night Shyamalan is one of the biggest ‘red flags’ in Hollywood.
The trailer is OK, the post-apocalyptic (CGI-heavy) Earth looks fine and we get a good look at the various animals that inhabit it. I am currently much more interested in how this film is received by critics and audiences and than I am in actually seeing it, but maybe that will change as the release date approaches.
The supporting cast includes Isabelle Fuhrman, Zoe Kravitz, David Denman, Sophie Okonedo and Glenn Morshower.
A crash landing leaves teenager Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith) and his legendary father Cypher (Will Smith) stranded on Earth, 1,000 years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape. With Cypher critically injured, Kitai must embark on a perilous journey to signal for help, facing uncharted terrain, evolved animal species that now rule the planet, and an unstoppable alien creature that escaped during the crash. Father and son must learn to work together and trust one another if they want any chance of returning home.
