New Poster for Spike Lee’s Remake of Oldboy, Featuring Josh Brolin

And so it begins.  The marketing campaign for Spike Lee’s Oldboy may be in its infancy, but it catches a wave of anticipation near its apex.  Park Chan-wook’s definitive cinematic masterpiece of the same name packs a punch – a story of revenge told so expertly that uttering the film’s name calls on echoes of the darker sides of humanity depicted as only Chan-wook can.  Spike Lee’s choice to remake this film is no doubt intriguing, but his version has high standards to live up to.

“Remake material” can be easy to spot, but it’s not necessarily as easy to execute.  This latest poster doesn’t play any tricks; it’s a simple screenshot from the film of Josh Brolin emerging from a trunk.  It’s a nice metaphor: that box contains a mystery within.  How did Brolin get there? Why is he in there? From these questions, his journey towards revenge begins.

This remake of Oldboy also stars Elisabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Imperioli, Sharlto Copley, and Lance Reddick.  It’s slated for a release on October 25th.
