Sony has released a new extended trailer and new ‘action’ featurette for Roland Emmerich’s White House Down. The film centers around a Secret Service applicant (Channing Tatum) who must save the President (Jamie Foxx) when a group of heavily-armed paramilitary invaders takes control of the White House.
I generally enjoy Roland Emmerich films, but I hesitate to say he has ever made a great one. He blows stuff up, does set action pieces better than most, but story-telling and character development aren’t his strong suits. So to help counteract his shortcomings, he hires actors with a strong screen presence to help push the narrative.
Enter Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx, both of whom have film credits all over the place. A year ago Tatum was promoting a low-budget male stripper movie that went on to gross $113 million at the box office, and Foxx was filming a movie where he played a slave-turned-bounty hunter and now stars as the President. These guys are doing everything in their power to avoid the dreaded Hollywood typecasting.
The films supporting cast includes Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins, Joey King, Jimmi Simpson, Lance Reddick, Rachelle Lefevre and James Woods.
In Columbia Pictures’ White House Down, Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation’s government falling into chaos and time running out, it’s up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.
