In this featurette for The Great Gatsby, director Baz Luhrmann exclaims to the people on his set over a microphone: “There’s a lot of oohing and ahhing, because nobody has used 3D like we are using”. I’m curious to see how.
There’s no question that when you watch clips from his modernization of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel of love and betrayal, the picture they paint of America in the 1920s is vibrant, lush, and downright hedonistic. While I have no doubt that the 3D will enhance some of the more eye-popping sequences, The Great Gatsby is, at its core, a drama about clashing character convictions.
Will the 3D be a gimmick or will it enhance our experience of this classic tale? We’ll find out when it opens this Friday, May 10th.
