Here’s the bottom line: if you’re a fan of Jackass, then you’ll love this. If you’re not exactly amused by the self-inflicted pain & gain that rocketed them to fame back in the early 2000s, then you probably won’t go see Bad Grandpa.
Does the trailer make the basic concept worth seeing?
Irving Zisman is played by Johnny Knoxville. During the series and films, he’d make an appearance to usual and expected success. Be it sketches with fake testicles hanging out of his pants, or encouraging a foul-mouthed grandson to run his mouth in public, the scenes were always memorable. Out of all of the reoccurring characters that became beloved Jackass standards, Knoxville’s “Bad Grandpa” probably had the greatest potential to go feature length. Question is, did it need to be made into a feature-length movie? One thing’s for sure: it will be, at the very least, a long time before we see the full Jackass group together again. Ryan Dunn’s passing likely has changed the group’s dynamic and out of respect, the troupe might not reunite for years to come. Also let’s face it, they’re not 19-25 anymore; their bodies don’t recoup the way they used to. Bad Grandpa may be the first to test the potential of spin-offs. If you’re wondering how successful this might be, remember that Sasha Baron Cohen has proven that this sort of prank or “inside joke” comedy can be pulled off.
Directed by Knoxville’s business partner / longtime Jackass quarterback Jeff Tremaine, this film only has one other star. Jackson Nicoll will probably win most people over with what looks to be a seriously hilarious, scene-stealing performance.
I don’t know guys, this trailer is pretty phenomenal, and had me laughing out loud. If you were skeptical about the Bad Grandpa announcement just over a year ago, this trailer will likely wash away any doubt. The last thirty seconds are proof of concept.
Bad Grandpa opens on October 25th.
86-year-old Irving Zisman is on a journey across America with the most unlikely companions, his 8 year-old Grandson Billy in “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa”. This October, the signature Jackass character Irving Zisman (Johnny Knoxville) and Billy (Jackson Nicholl) will take movie audiences along for the most insane hidden camera road trip ever captured on camera. Along the way Irving will introduce the young and impressionable Billy to people, places and situations that give new meaning to the term childrearing. The duo will encounter male strippers, disgruntled child beauty pageant contestants (and their equally disgruntled mothers), funeral home mourners, biker bar patrons and a whole lot of unsuspecting citizens. Real people in unreal situations, making for one really messed up comedy
