Is Grumpy Cat the new Garfield? The internet is a-buzz with several confirmations that the answer to that question is big, depressing, “Yes”. Several internet sources are reporting that Todd Garner and Sean Robins from Broken Road Productions are in talks with Grumpy Cat’s (whose real name is actually Tardar Sauce) representatives to develop a family film.
Todd Garner’s statement…
This started off as a picture of a cat, but rare is an image that evokes that much comedy. You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.
No cat can ever replace Garfield, but I have to admit, Tardar Sauce is cartoonish enough to truly be the star of a workable concept. Set her up with a zany, overly-enthusiastic family whose endeavours & attitudes are shot down by everyone’s favourite Grumpy Cat, and you’d have a decent little show. How sustainable that show might be remains to be seen. I’m all for this, but I’m not convinced it could work as full-length feature or even a half-hour TV show.
If you look past the obvious money grab, the success of this project might determine how and which future film ideas are green lit. Can you imagine a movie based on Me Gusta? Or how about GGG (Good Guy Greg)? It doesn’t sound like such a far-fetched idea. From a business standpoint, the popularity question has already been answered; your focal research already completed. From a fan standpoint, who wouldn’t want to see a TV show about the misadventures of Scumbag Steve? That show just wrote itself.
Still, the internet’s thirst for humourous things is unquenchable and has a high turnover, so it’s important to remember that though Grumpy Cat has been immortalized in hundreds of memes, too much of a good thing can be bad.
