Dreamworks has released the first trailer for director Scott Waugh’s upcoming adaptation of the best selling video game Need for Speed. The plot/excuse for car chases centers around a cross-country race against time as a struggling blue-collar mechanic Tobey Marshall, (Aaron Paul) who was framed for manslaughter by a his former partner Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper); a wealthy, arrogant ex-NASCAR driver sets out for revenge in a high-stakes underground racing tournament.
With the success of the Fast and Furious franchise it was only a matter of time until another car racing franchise would get launched and combined with one of the best selling videogame franchises of all time seems like a potentially profitable formula.
I’m not sure what I expected but this looks very watchable. Looks like there is a legit story and potentially a solid movie, not just a Fast & Furious rip-off. The track record of video game adaptations is pretty sketchy but Need for Speed looks like it could be different. Pleasant surprise here, i’m sold.
The supporting cast includes Imogen Poots, Scott Mescudi, Ramon Rodriguez, Michael Keaton, Rami Malek, Dakota Johnson and Harrison Gilbertson.
Framed for a crime he didn’t commit, muscle car mechanic and street racer Tobey (Aaron Paul) gets out of prison determined to settle the score with the man responsible for his false conviction.
