Summit Entertainment has released the first trailer for director Neil Burger’s upcoming Divergent. The film is an adaptation of Veronica Roth’s futuristic novel of the same name and is set in future world where people are assigned into predetermined factions based on their personality. Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a teenage girl who doesn’t fit into any of the standard groups and faces grave consequences because of it.
After Twilight launched this craze of young-adult adaptations there have been blockbuster successes with the Twilight franchise (over 3.3 billion worldwide) and The Hunger Games (almost 700 million with 3 entries left to go) and a larger series of flops including Beautiful Creatures, The Host and this weekends The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. But if we’ve learned one thing about Hollywood they aren’t afraid to stop swinging for the fences or run a genre into the ground.
The film has an amazing cast and the trailer hints at all the elements required for the genre, action, suspense and teen romance. The cast includes Theo James, Kate Winslet, Ray Stevenson, Mekhi Phifer, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Ben Lamb, Christian Madsen, Amy Newbold, Ashley Judd and Tony Goldwyn.
