In the wake of Tom Clancy’s recent passing, Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer and poster for the reboot of Clancy’s most famous character-on-film: Jack Ryan. The film, which was formerly known as just that, has now been renamed to Jack Ryan Shadow Recruit.
Though Chris Pine is the fourth actor to play Jack Ryan in a movie, this is the first film with an original story not based on one written by Clancy. The film follows much of Ryan’s earlier life, creating new dates on the character’s timeline, before The Hunt for Red October. The film is written by David Koepp and directed by Kenneth Branagh, who stars as the villain. Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley, Colm Feore and Gemma Chan also star.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit opens on December 25th, 2013.
The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner). When Ryan believes he’s uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that’s more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley).
