Disney has released the first trailer for Muppets Most Wanted, the sequel to the rejuvenating “reboot” from 2011.  The teaser primarily focuses on The Muppets themselves (as it should) with brief appearances from some of the film’s supporting cast, including Ty Burrell, Ricky Gervais, Tina Fey & Sean Combs.

The whole gang – even Walter – returns for the sequel, which opens March 21, 2014.  While the teaser has a more Gleeful tone (a “Moves Like Jagger” cover? Ugh.), I have faith that the franchise’s new captains – returning director James Bobin and writer Nicholas Stoller – will give us more of what we loved so much about the reboot starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams.  Being a long-time fan of Jim Henson’s creations, I really hope that Disney recognizes and avoids the pitfalls that redefined The Muppets as a direct-to-DVD brand.

Synopsis

Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais, creator of “Derek” and the Golden Globe®- and Emmy®-winning series “The Office” and “Extras.” The film stars Golden Globe-, Emmy- and SAG Award®-winning actress and writer Tina Fey (“30 Rock,” “Mean Girls,” “Date Night”) as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Emmy Award winner Ty Burrell (TV’s “Modern Family”) as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.
