Scott Cooper has taken on an interesting project that seems worlds away from the romanticism of his previous directorial effort, the Academy darling Crazy Heart. If there’s any connection between the two (and I’m sure you’ll be happy to discover…), it’s that they are both deeply rooted, character-driven stories.
Out of the Furnace is a film about two brothers who grow up in destitution within the “Rust Belt”; their entire lives they’ve dreamt of escaping their reality for a brighter future. As Russell (Bale) finds himself in prison, at no true fault of his own, his younger brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) becomes sucked into the darker criminal underbelly that only such levels of destitution can create, and at great cost. When Russell is released from prison, he must choose between his own freedom or risk everything to seek justice for his brother.
Combine that sort of potential for dramatic intensity and then cast Bale, Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Forest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Sam F*cking Shepard & Zoe Saldana, and I think you’ve got something special. Cooper shares writing credits with Brad Ingelsby. The film is produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Kavanaugh, Ridley Scott and Michael Costigan.
Out of the Furnace will receive a limited release starting November 27th, expanding to more screens on December 6th. You know… just in time for the holiday spirit.
