The director of the sequel to X-Men: First Class, Bryan Singer, took to Twitter yesterday and posted this image from Days of Future Past. He chose to feature his Jack The Giant Slayer star Nicholas Hoult in full makeup as Beast as the first official character to be revealed from the film, which is slated for a July 14, 2014 release date.
Singer is currently in gearing up for principle photography, which is taking place in Montreal over the next several months. It will be the first X-Men film to be released in 3D.
I’m a little nervous about the approach to what is, as far as comic books-on-film go, a complicated story. Singer will be uniting the actors from his two X-Men films with those from First Class. As many superhero films have proven in the past, when it comes to character balance on screen, less is more. This is obviously difficult to do because, let’s face it, it is X-Men. However, one of my favourite features of Matthew Vaughn’s First Class was that it felt like a smaller, contained cast despite there being several characters on each side of good and evil.

The storyline alternates between present day, in which the X-Men fight Mystique’s Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, and a future timeline caused by the X-Men’s failure to prevent the Brotherhood from assassinating Senator Robert Kelly. In this future universe, Sentinels rule the United States, and mutants live in internment camps. The present-day X-Men are forewarned of the possible future by a future version of their teammate Kitty Pryde, whose mind traveled back in time and possessed her younger self to warn the X-Men. She succeeds in her mission and returns to the future, but despite her success, the future timeline still exists as an alternative timeline rather than as the actual future.
