The immense carnage that awaits audiences in Pacific Rim is only a few short weeks away. While most of us don’t need any more convincing, we’ve got a brand new trailer entitled, “At The Edge” to coerce the small margin of movie-goers who are too quick to call this a Transformers rip-off.
The new trailer is a 50/50 mix of established footage and new scenes. Backdropped by a 2001: A Space Odyssey-esque breathe track, I could feel my heart start to race as the neural handshake initiates and the monstrous Jaegers are dropped into the sea. Besides, Idris Elba’s rousing “Cancelling the apocalypse!” gets the old hero mojo flowing through the arteries this early in the morning.
In addition to the new trailer, some new hi-res images hit the web yesterday. The images feature most of the cast, including Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Clifton Collins Jr., Charlie Day, Max Martini, Ron Perlman and Rob Kazinsky. It opens in IMAX 3D on July 12th.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Below, we’ve included any new images that were released yesterday. We found that some were simply screen grabs from the trailer…
