This holiday season will be marked by some as the time to get excited for the second instalment of The Hobbit Trilogy, The Desolation of Smaug. This new behind-the-scenes featurette takes an insightful look at one of the coolest sets ever, The House of Beorn.
In the story, Thorin and our heroes duck into Beorn’s house to seek refuge after being chased. Beorn is a character who is sometimes a man, sometimes a bear. When in manly form, he’s a giant – even compared to Gandalf. To achieve this illusion practically, the set and production designers literally crafted set pieces of Beorn’s house to belarger-than-life.
This video explores these techniques and like many Hobbit featurettes, has interesting commentary from cast & crew.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens in theatres on December 13th.
