Though a short-lived series, the legacy of Freaks and Geeks rivals even the longest running, most critically acclaimed shows. I recently went back and re-watched the series from beginning to end, and was re-wowed at its simplicity, performances, and overall genius. Even if you couldn’t identify directly with a clique, you could always find something to relate to in between.
A lot of what people relate to is Lindsay Weir’s (Linda Cardellini) relationship with her parents, played by Becky Ann Baker and SCTV’s Joe Flaherty. Harold Weir had some of the best lines on the show. ‘The Dad’ character could have been someone you were meant to despise, but Flaherty gave just enough heart to his performance that you could never stay mad at the guy – even if he was making Lindsay or Sam suffer for their youthful indiscretions.
Check out the supercut of Flaherty’s hilarious performance – the antithesis to the classic “on-screen dad”.
