First, the big news. It was announced yesterday that AMC has green-lit the Breaking Bad spinoff Better Call Saul, starring Bob Odenkirk as your favourite dirty lawyer from Albuquerque. From Variety:
New series will serve as a prequel to “Breaking Bad” and center on Saul Goodman, the attorney that eventually becomes Walter White’s lawyer. Bob Odenkirk, who plays Goodman on the parent series, will star in the spinoff, with “Breaking Bad” vet Peter Gould spearheading the project. The Program will hail from Sony Pictures TV, the studio behind “Breaking Bad,” and Vince Gilligan will remain involved in the creative process of the spinoff.
The path to striking the “Better Call Saul” deal was rocky for Sony Pictures TV and AMC. Sony TV had leverage with Netflix waiting just off stage ready to pounce on the Goodman spinoff if AMC passed, as “Breaking Bad” reruns are said to be a big draw for the Netcaster.
I’m really excited that this is happening. The challenge with any spinoff is to carry the fan-base from one show to the other, ensuring success. We’ve seen many spinoffs succeed and fail over the years but, Bob Odenkirk is one hell of an actor, comedian and writer and deserves to headline his own show. I can’t think of a better way to let his abilities take centre stage.
Now that this TV show is a reality , let the fan-made trailers and dedications come rolling in. To kick it all off, here’s a fan-made opening for the new series with a 1980s twist:
